Not To Scale depicts contemporary Australian life with an emphasis on Brisbane’s urban environment. Lonely vistas void of human forms are created and filled with repetitive imagery. However life is still present, manifested in the unseen and undervalued beauty of the everyday. Artist Jeffrey Smart highlighted this attraction stating, "It's obvious a bunch of flowers… is beautiful, and I love natural beauty, but I am not moved by it". The focus on this underappreciated raw aesthetic encourages audiences to re-evaluate their own place in the urban sprawl. With ambiguous and open settings viewers can take their own journey through the landscape and imagine the world outside the frame. This approach has been influenced by Smart’s stark and absurd portrayals of the modern landscape and Edward Hopper’s cold, hard-edged representations of American life.
